I’ve decided to push my writing further by participating in the blogosphere’s A to Z Challenge in April for the first time.
It works like this: If we take Sundays off, there are twenty-six days in April. Coincidentally, there are twenty-six letters in the alphabet. So, I’m going to blog everyday in April, except Sundays, and the corresponding letter of the alphabet is going to work as a prompt to the subject of the post.
A theme will probably lend structure to the creative process and make the whole exercise easier, so I’ve also signed up for the Theme Reveal. Which means I have to reveal my theme in a post, er … today. So…drum roll, please…. I’ve chosen ‘Memories’ as my theme.
I’m calling it Memories rather than Memoir because I think that being vague about genre will allow me more creative licence, and I can write about the nature of memory, slippery little toad that it is, as well as recount some of my own.
I also intend to come at this exercise in a ‘writerly’ way, and experiment with the concept of memory and creative non-fiction in prose rather than simply write straightforward vanilla ‘recount’ and ‘inform’. That’s what I intend to do anyway; whether April works out that way is, probably, another matter.
On April 1st, ‘A’ will be for ‘Amsterdam’, and so on. I imagine that travel will feature throughout the month, and maybe some childhood ‘stuff’ will also surface. Maybe I’ll remember people too, and events. I want it to be organic, and write as I go rather than have a load of posts ready beforehand.
I’d love to read your comments throughout April if you have the time to leave some. I am writing a novel, looking after children, and trying to pen other money-earning articles, so I don’t have a whole lot of time either, but I see this exercise as much about reaching out and finding other blogs as it is about challenging my own, so I’ll be visiting as many bloggers as I can and commenting myself.
To all A to Z bloggers, I wish you luck and plenty of ideas and ink.
